Adult Bible Study Group
Are you still living with your youthful Sunday School understanding of theology, ethics and Biblical knowledge while the rest of your life has moved on to more mature and challenging concepts? Here’s the place to ask that question you’ve always wanted to ask but were too embarrassed to ask. This free wheeling, no holds barred discussion group stands ready to provide the support and fellowship to help you in your quest for a deeper and more meaningful understanding of what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. Topics, as chosen by the group, such as parables from a Mid-Eastern perspective, the creeds of the Christian Church, what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit, origins of Holy Scripture and others of similar nature are explored with the goal of increased knowledge as opposed to indoctination.
If you already have all the answers then you probably don’t need this group. If, on the other hand, statements such as “All translators are traitors”, “Translation is interpretation” and “Job was not a patient man” stir a spark of interest in you, then come join our group and share your insights and help us as we attempt to grow into the “fullness of Christ”.
We studies ”The Evolution of God” by Robert Wright. We recently studied Rodney Stark’s “Rise of Christianity” in order to understand, from a Sociologist’s point of view, why Christianity became the dominant religion of the Roman Empire by 350AD and Bart Ehrman’s “God Problem . . .Why We Suffer.” This Summer we’ll be studying comparative religions concentrating on the “big” five – Hinduism. Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
We meet every Sunday at 9:45 AM in the downstairs class room.
